DESCRIPTION:Café Scientifique is a place where, for the price of a cup of coffee or a glass of wine, anyone can come to explore the latest ideas in science and technology. It is an informal non-academic event and everyone is welcome.\n\nAt 7.30pm on Wednesday November 7th 2012, The Robert Gillow Pub (upstairs) (64 Market Street, Lancaster LA1 1HP, 01524 36092) will host Professor Richard Bardgett, talking about 'The vital importance of soil'.\n\nFor much of history, soil has played a major, and often central role in the lives of humans. Entire societies have risen, and collapsed, through the management or mismanagement of soil; farmers and gardeners worldwide nurture their soil to provide their plants with water, nutrients and protection from pests and diseases; major battles have been aborted or stalled by the condition of soil; and, above all this, soil, and the multitude of organisms that live in it, control all the biogeochemical cycles on which the functioning of the Earth depends. Richard Bardgett will talk about soil and the many, often unexpected, ways that humans depend on it, both knowingly and unknowingly.\n\nPlease come along, to take part in the discussions or just to listen.
