SUMMARY:Biodiversity, Ecosystem Services and Food Security
DESCRIPTION:Food production is underpinned by multiple ecosystem services which rely on biodiversity. Using pollination as an example, I demonstrate which taxa are the real suppliers of this service and show how they can be effectively managed at local and landscape scales to help reduce shortfalls in crop production. I then use economic evaluations of pollination services to explore various policy options for protecting and managing pollinators. Finally, I discuss how other ecosystem services, such as pest regulation and soil fertility, could also be managed together with pollination to address food security challenges.
