SUMMARY:SPEARS Seminar: Laboratory and Numerical Simulations of Auroral Kilometric Radiation
DESCRIPTION:Auroral kilometric radiation (AKR) is a natural source of electromagnetic radiation produced above the earth's auroral regions. AKR is observable from satellites, and the total integrated power radiated can be typically 1 or 2 GW. To understand the physical mechanism a laboratory experiment has been constructed and has simulated the production of AKR. Also, using a particle in cell program, numerical simulations have been carried out and compared with both the results from the laboratory experiment and with the natural observations. As a result of this research the traditional explanation of AKR has needed to be modified.
