SUMMARY:Interdisciplinary Seminar in Computer Simulation, Arts, and Media
DESCRIPTION:The Department of Management Science has invited Professor Paul A Fishwick, Professor of Computer and Information Science and Engineering at the University of Florida, to share his expertise in computer simulation, arts, and media in a seminar that will appeal across disciplinary boundaries.\n\nComputer software drives most aspects of modern life from mobile phones, wristwatches, and automobiles to dynamic models of catastrophes and fragile ecosystems. The structures of software and dynamic models are varied, fascinating, and relevant to the general public.\n\nYet we have failed to bring these structures into the public sphere through effective media installations and exhibitions. Software and model structures are encoded as arcane narratives or sketched with icons—undecipherable except to experts in a small set of narrow fields. Professor Fishwick will overview initiatives that combine elements from computer science, humanities, and the arts to offer ways to address these deficits.\n\nPaul Fishwick is Professor of Computer and Information Science and Engineering at the University of Florida, and Director of the Digital Arts and Sciences (DAS) Curricula.\n\nHe is active in several communities relating to design including aesthetic computing, software visualization, simulation & modeling, and parallel hardware for simulation.\n\nFishwick obtained the PhD at the Moore School of the University of Pennsylvania, is an SCS Fellow, and has published widely in books, journals, and conferences relating to modeling and simulation.
