SUMMARY:National Science and Engineering Week 2009
DESCRIPTION:As part of National Science and Engineering Week 2009 Lancaster University are holding a series of activities to promote Science and Technology to school students.\n\nThe activities are spread across four days (approx 10am-3pm) and are aimed at year 10 and 11 students.\n\nMonday 9 March: Engineering and Physics Bottle Rocket Challenge. The students will spend the day looking at the basic mechanics of rockets, the effect of thrust, and air resistance before designing and constructing the rockets. The afternoon will involve launcing the rockets and evaluating performance.\n\nWednesday 11 March: Lancaster Environment Centre Day - Departments of Geography, Biology and Environmental Science sessions. The day will include stepping into the shoes of an environmental chemist and analysing samples from a mine, considering what is in blood and discovering what a Geographer does!\n\nThursday 12 March: (Morning session only) Mind Games: Psychology in Action. Students will discover real-world applications of the science of psychology. They'll experience how the mind is tricked by illusions of vision, audition, and attention, and will learn about the different roles of the hemispheres of the brain.\n\nFriday 13 March: Departments of Maths, Computing and Communication Systems offering a series of interactive talks and practical sessions. The day will include an interactive lecture on Maths and Magic and will inform students how they can become billionaires with GCSE Maths! Students will also get the opportunity to create animation, design a small robot and even race robots as part of a packed day!\n\nFor further information please download the session details.\n\nWe hope students will find these sessions both informative and fun, and that they will be encouraged to keep studying science and technology related subjects within school.\n\nDue to a great response we only have limited places available.
