DESCRIPTION:Graphene - single atomic plane pulled out of graphite - is a wonder material. It has many superlatives to its name. It is the thinnest material in the universe and the strongest one ever measured.\n\nIts charge carriers exhibit the highest intrinsic mobility, have zero effective mass and can travel micron distances without scattering at room temperature.\n\nGraphene can sustain current densities a million times higher than that of copper, shows record thermal conductivity and stiffness, is impermeable to gases and reconciles such conflicting qualities as brittleness and ductility.\n\nElectrons in graphene behave in such a way that this allows the investigation of relativistic quantum phenomena in a bench-top experiment.\n\nAndre Geim will overview his work on graphene concentrating on its fascinating electronic and optical properties and speculate about future applications.\n\nProfessor Andre Geim, FRS\n\nAndre Geim is the Langworthy Professor of Physics, Royal Society (2010 Anniversary) Research Professor, and Director of The Manchester Centre for Mesoscience and Nanotechnology at The University of Manchester.\n\nAmong various honors he has received are the Mott Medal and Prize of the Institute of Physics, UK, the EuroPhysics Prize, the K&ouml;rber European Science Award and the John J. Carty Award for the Advancement of Science given by the U.S. National Academy of Sciences.
