SUMMARY:Mineral Solutions to Global Problems: How can minerals feed the world in 2050?
DESCRIPTION:Centre for Sustainable Agriculture Seminar\n\nAll plant nutrients except N (and C) come from geological sources. We have become used to more than adequate supply of fertilizers, but prices are rising and availability is being questioned. Wastage through pollution of surface waters emphasises the need to better use of nutrient resources. \n\nEven at the present time, current mining of K and P is inadequate to feed existing populations. Given the predicted rises in population, especially in Africa, and increasing difficulties with supply, future fertiliser sources and protocols need imaginative solutions.\n\nThis seminar explores the issues, and makes the case for wider ranging and more innovative use of mineral raw materials to meet the needs of food production for future generations.
