SUMMARY:Practice theory: concept, research and intervention
DESCRIPTION:Society and Environment Seminar \n\nIn recent years, practice theory has become a popular conceptual frame for understanding social phenomena, particularly those encountered in everyday life. In the context of sustainability and especially energy consumption, researchers have also employed practice theory to understand change in these phenomena, both over extended historical periods and as it happens. In this latter category, employing what are becoming known as 'practice interviews', researchers are examining the outcomes of both their own and others' interventions in everyday life. In the context of the presenters' own work, practice theory is also being used to inform interventions as part of a community action project.\n\nIn this seminar, the presenters will draw on their experiences in two ongoing projects, CHARM and Smart Communities. They will discuss: the ways in which practice theory informs their conceptual, empirical and interventionist efforts; the conceptual insights that their empirical work has yielded to date; and, the methodological, practical and conceptual challenges or limitations of working with practice theory in these diverse ways.\n\nRefreshments provided.
