SUMMARY:Towards an Artificial Conscience for Robots
DESCRIPTION:This talk by Engineering's Derek Seward will briefly discuss the concepts of 'conscience',' free-will' and 'consciousness' in relation to intelligent robots and then describe recent work carried out at Lancaster into the design of robot architectures that will enable autonomous robots to operate safely in unstructured environments.\n\nThe possible conflict between safety and effective task achievement will also be considered. A means of providing a robot with either a timid or a reckless personality will be suggested.\n\nAll are welcome. Tea, coffee and cake will be provided.
