SUMMARY:CRESTxLancaster 2013
DESCRIPTION:As part of its knowledge transfer and professional development activities, CREST - the professional body representing the ethical security testing and incident response industry - is introducing CRESTx, a spin-off from its flagship conference CRESTCon. \n\nCRESTx gives businesses and students the opportunity to access the most up to date information and ideas in the domain of cyber security through a series of engaging and thought-provoking presentations. At the same time, CRESTx provides a platform for students to exhibit their research to the wider academic community and the cyber security industry.\n\nCRESTx Lancaster: Short Talks on Big Ideas in Cyber Security will be the first in the series of CRESTx conferences. It will be hosted on the 3rd July 2013 by Security Lancaster an EPSRC-GCHQ Academic Centre of Excellence in Cyber Security. The centre brings together Lancaster University's research in cyber security, security futures, investigative expertise, violence and society, and transport and infrastructure protection.\n\nThe conference will highlight the multi-disciplinary research of Security Lancaster and a number of its key partners in industry. Based on their specialisms, the conference talks will be split over 4 sessions: (1) Privacy and Personal Security; (2) Critical Infrastructure Protection; (3) Governance, Risk Management and Compliance; and, (4) The Human Element of Cyber Security.\n\nCRESTx Lancaster will feature 20 speakers, with each session consisting of 5 talks, including a session-specific keynote address. Talks will last between 5 and 20 minutes.\n\nInformation regarding the event will also be distributed via twitter @CRESTxLancs\n\n\nMore Information\n

SUMMARY:Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) Resource Recovery from Waste Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday 9th July, 10.00am - 4.00pm\nWednesday 10th July 10.00am - 1.00pm\n\nLancaster Environment Centre in partnership with Stopford Projects Ltd is pleased to host a Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) funded one-and-a-half day collaborative workshop event dedicated to resource recovery from waste.\n\nThe project seeks to optimise the value of waste streams derived from biomass energy generation such as anaerobic digestion (AD) and thermal conversion technologies (incineration, gasification and pyrolysis), through developing a suite of novel soil conditioners and plant fertilisers. As a whole, the project will be conducted in two phases: (i) a catalyst phase taking place on 9th - 10th July, and (ii) a proposal building phase concentrating on key issues related to application for a second phase of funding (date to be confirmed). In this first catalyst phase, the project will scope and bring together a network of multi-disciplinary policy and industry leaders, as well as scientists and end science users to create a powerful, new, international consortium connecting eco-innovative business to high quality research for positive environmental benefits. The network will enable the research challenges relating to product formulation, performance and market acceptance to be identified, and metrics to assess the impact of application to land to be developed.\n\nThe second phase (date to be confirmed) will involve a more focused workshop event, enabling the key research questions to be refined and a multidisciplinary science plan to be established.\n\nThe output of this exercise is to develop a NERC research proposal that will address a "whole systems approach" for the recovery of nutrients from biomass to energy derived waste streams for use in agriculture, and ultimately a second stage of funding.\n\nNERC Project aims\n\nTo develop, test and optimise a novel soil conditioning material with enhanced monetary value, derived from the waste streams from bio-energy generation, for use in agriculture.\nBenchmark the performance of the novel soil conditioning materials to that of conventional mineral based fertilizers.\nTo assess the environmental, social and human health impacts of applying a waste derived product to land, which in turn will impact market acceptance. \n\n\n\nNERC Project Outcomes\nSuccessful innovation in this area will result in:\n\nEnhanced marketability and value of bio-energy derived waste material\nDiversion of waste from landfill\nAddress resource scarcity issues in relation to macro- and micro-nutrients\nRelieve the pressure on extraction of virgin minerals for fertilizer production\nProvide a source of organic matter to soils\nFacilitating carbon sequestration\nThe development of a sustainable and low-cost alternative to mineral based land conditioners, which in turn will promote improved food security and competitive food pricing\nAddress uncertainties relating to environmental impact and human health.\n\n\n\nThe opening workshop will be held on Tuesday 9th - Wednesday 10th July at Lancaster Environment Centre, Lancaster University. On site hotel accommodation is available for which we are able to provide financial re-imbursement, and a buffet lunch will be provided.\n\nFor background information related to this project and all other queries, contact Matt Riding via e-mail at m.riding@lancaster.ac.uk.\n\nCollaborative Partners\n\n\nProf. Kirk T.
