SUMMARY:West Lancs ICT Cluster Group
DESCRIPTION:Research and Development Tax Credits\n\nIf you missed our September Technology Matters event on R&D Tax Credits there is another chance to catch up on this subject at the next West Lancs ICT Cluster Group meeting.\n\nYour organisation could be losing valuable tax relief opportunities by not making effective claims for research and development tax. So to point companies in the right direction, West Lancashire District Council in partnership with Business Link and InfoLab21 are hosting an ICT cluster meeting around this subject.\n\nThis free networking event is primarily aimed at businesses in Information Technology, Creative or New Media but is open to other sectors where this topic is relevant to their operation. It will cover all aspects of claiming for research and development tax relief with a specific focus on the rules for research and development tax credits, highlighting how the relief can be applied to those businesses in the ICT sector.\n \nCllr Ian Grant, Portfolio Holder for Regeneration and Planning, said:\n \n"The definition of research and development for tax purposes is wider than most businesses realise and offers considerable opportunities to secure additional tax benefits.\n\n"Many people think it is just an activity carried out by people in lab coats in dedicated research facilities, but this is only one small area where companies might benefit.\n\n"Product development activities where there is an advance in science or technology may also be eligible and when you look at the full definition in relation to tax credits lots of companies carry out some form of research and development, even if they don't think of it strictly in those terms."\n \nKey Speakers:\n\nREBECCA MURDOCH - Corporate Tax Compliance Tax and People Services - KPMG LLP (UK) - "Claiming R&D Tax Relief"\n\nKPMG will be presenting on all aspects of claiming for R&D tax relief with a specific focus on the rules for research and development tax credits, highlighting how the relief can be applied to those in the ICT sector. The definition of Research and Development ("R&D") for tax purposes is wider than most businesses realise and offers considerable opportunities to secure additional tax benefits. \n\nMany people would tend to think of R&D as an activity carried out by people in lab coats in dedicated research facilities and although, in terms of the appropriate definitions for tax credits, carrying out both pure and applied research is covered, this is only one small area where companies might benefit. Product development activities where there is an advance in science or technology area may also be eligible and when you look at the full definition in relation to tax credits you find that the majority of companies carry out some form of R&D, even if they don't think of it strictly in those terms. Many businesses could be loosing valuable tax relief opportunities by not making effective claims for R&D tax.\n\nWAYNE MERRIDEW - Antesta Ltd - "Project Management"\n\nWayne will give a presentation on the evolution of his company to provide project management skills to schools, community groups and business. His company was recently created following an extensive career with a major telecommunications company. His career has involved the delivery of large projects in the implementation of new technologies as well as training and management roles in technology support and the development of Operational Support Systems and Access Technologies. One aspect of the company's work is the development and delivery of a concise cost effective training package for staff and leaders in schools and community groups. This allows the staff to 'project manage' the creation of a dynamic, easily editable website which showcases the activities of the group. For businesses the company provides support for all aspects of project management from technology implementation and building readiness to looking at the important people issues such as 'change management'.\n\nFor further information or to book your place please contact:\nKaren Kerrrigan\n01695 577177\nkaren.kerrigan@westlancsdc.gov.uk
