Physics behind Pre-Earthquake Signals
Wednesday 19 November 2008, 1600-1700
Cavendish Lecture Theatre
A talk by Professor Friedemann T Freund (NASA Ames Research Center, California).
Stressed rocks generate electric currents, leading to the emission of IR photons, which constitute Earth's Thermal IR Anomaly (TIR); observable days before earthquakes. Detection of TIR from space can be the basis of an earthquake warning system.
