Lancaster University is home to two prestigious EPSRC-funded Doctoral Training Centres (HighWire and STOR-i), and is an active partner in NOWNANO and the EngD Nuclear Consortium.

Creating Innovative People for Radical Change
HighWire is a world class, cross-disciplinary and user-centric initiative with innovation at the heart of its curriculum and ethos.

STOR-i
Excellence with impact
Statistics and operational research are fundamental to today's data-driven decision making processes. STOR-i students enter a vibrant research environment which provides training at the interface of statistics and operational research.
The STOR-i Centre has a very distinctive mission, benefiting from considerable input and investment from industry and the public sector.
Our shared vision is to develop highly employable people who have a proven capacity for delivering excellent research at the interface of statistics, operational research and industry and with the skills needed for effective careers.
North West Doctoral Training Centre (NWDTC)
The largest centre in England for social science postgraduate training
The North West Doctoral Training Centre (NWDTC) is one of 21 in the UK, created by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), and will provide PhD students with access to quality research training in social science disciplines. Collaborating universities Lancaster, Liverpool and Manchester are guaranteed a total of 63 new postgraduate studentships per year to support research and training at doctoral level. This amounts to more than £15 million of investment over five years.
Students will have access to research expertise across Liverpool, Manchester and Lancaster, allowing them to take advantage of a variety of study in social sciences, as well as in subjects where scientists are collaborating with colleagues from other disciplines such as medicine and the arts.
NOWNANO
The North West Nanoscience Doctoral Training Centre
NOWNANO builds on the world-leading expertise in all nanoscience within Manchester and Lancaster universities to offer a broad interdisciplinary doctoral training centre.
PhD students receive initial training to outline the breadth and potential of nanoscience, before they focus on mastering one specific area of the subject. Throughout the research training the cohort will meet and discuss their research, building a group of outstanding scientists that will help to lead world research in nanoscience in the future.
Nuclear EngD
New engineering doctorate in nuclear engineering
Engineering at Lancaster is a full partner in the EPSRC Nuclear EngD centre which provides outstanding young nuclear Research Engineers with intensive, broad-based training in collaboration with industrial companies, equipping them to take up senior roles within the nuclear industry.
In addition to obtaining a high quality qualification, Research Engineers will gain experience of working in an industrial research and development environment. This four-year programme involves you, the Research Engineer, being based within an industrial company in the UK.
What are EPSRC Doctoral Training Centres?
EPSRC (Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council) Doctoral Training Centres represent a new approach to postgraduate study, with the aim of attracting and nurturing talented and skilled researchers.
DTC-based students carry out a PhD-level research project together with taught coursework in a supportive and exciting environment.
