Best Paper Award for Computing's Map Research
A Best Paper award from the International Conference on Human-Computer Interaction with Mobile Devices and Services has been received by the Computing department for collaborative research with the University of Munster on capturing You-Are-Here maps using mobile phones.
An EPSRC grant to continue the research was recently received by one of the paper's authors, Dr Keith Cheverst, with a value of 83,549 to fund a 3 year PhD student.
The research project is entitled: "EXTRAMS: Exploiting Traditional Map Signage with Mobile Devices". The project will investigate the way in which mobile phones can provide a useful and usable facility to support the capture, georeferencing and display of traditional You-Are-Here map signage.

Engineering students make finals of national start-up business competition
Engineering students Scott Nash, Daniel Richardson and Aaron Aboshio have won the northern heat of the Youth Entrepreneurs Scheme 'Engineering YES' competition for their spin-out renewable energy company Atlantis.
