Chemicals management in China
International Workshop. Jin Jiang Tower, Shanghai, December 14-15, 2010.
A high profile International workshop was held on the 14th and 15th December 2010 in Shanghai. Under the auspices of the RC-UK China Bridge program, the workshop was funded by Unilever and jointly organised by the Safety and Environmental Assurance Centre (Unilever), Lancaster Environment Centre and the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS).
The workshop gathered experts in academic, industrial, and regulatory institutes from China, Europe and North America to discuss the scientific development needs to underpin environmental risk assessment of chemicals used in consumer products that are discharged in household wastewater (e.g. home and personal care products and pharmaceuticals) within China.
The workshop drafted plans for research priorities, future collaborations and identified further international activities and needs in chemicals management and risk assessment. The immediate follow-up activity will be a new training programme on chemical management led by LEC and jointly organised by UK and Chinese academic and industrial partners in Beijing in early April 2011.
This responds to National needs in China and will develop into a long-term collaborative program. We look forward to welcoming Prof. Zhengtao Liu, Director of the Key Laboratory for Ecology Effect and Risk Estimation of Chemicals, Ministry of Environmental Protection, PR China to LEC in early March.

First Science and Technology Business Partnerships and Enterprise Annual Report 2011-2012 available to download now
2011-2012 saw the development of a new theme-based strategy for Business Partnerships and Enterprise in Science and Technology. The seven interdisciplinary themes are: Advanced Manufacturing, Energy, Environment, Health and Human Development, Information and Communication Technologies, Quantum Technology and Security. Each theme has dedicated professional staff to work with businesses and source the expertise they need.

The concept of a new university website, complete with mobile application, to capture the campus social scene at a glance, earned an enterprising student an iPad.
