Chemistry Week at Lancaster
The exploding washbottle trick was the highlight
Lancaster university ran activities aimed at two different groups of school students this November as part of the Royal Society of Chemistry's Chemistry Week.
Biological Sciences had visits from the year 11 classes (fifth form) of two schools who participated in demonstrations of smell, the effect of extreme cold and analysed fruit juices for vitamin C. The exploding washbottle trick was the highlight.
Environmental Science was visited by students studying AS level Chemistry at six different schools. The students explored the chemical impacts of mining in the Lake District, using a range of instruments and techniques. As one teacher observed "the students feel like proper chemists now".
