What will you study?

You will gain an understanding of biological principles and how they relate to the conservation of wildlife and ecosystems and you'll have the option to choose areas of specialisation from animal behaviour, environmental microbiology, plant ecology or global climate change. Lancaster is ideally situated for this degree as it is close to areas of high conservation interest, including lakes and coastline.

In your first year, you will study subjects including Biodiversity and Conservation and Environmental Processes, followed in your second year by Principles of Biodiversity Conservation and Environment and Society. Students on thisStudy Abroad variant of the Conservation Biology degree will spend their second year at one of our partner universities in the USA, Canada or Australasia. Options for your final year include Issues in Conservation Biology and Conservation in Practice.

Where could it take you?

Two thirds of our graduates forge careers in a related field, working with nature conservation organisations, government agencies or undertaking environmental research. Others have put their transferable skills to good use in teaching, management, consultancy and journalism.

Typical entry requirements

For courses starting in 2013:

A-level: AAB. to include two science A-levels fromBiol/Chem/Comp/Env Sci/Geog/Geol/Maths/Phys/Psychology. We normally expect three A-levels.

General Studies: Not accepted as one of 3 A-levels

Applied A-levels: Double unit in Science (BB) with a third A-level (A) or combination of AS-levels, providing there is no significant overlap. Alternatively, single unit in Science (A/B) with one other scientific A-level (A/B), plus another A-level (A/B) or combination of AS-levels, with no significant overlap.

Key Skills: Not included in offer

GCSE: Maths and English Language at grade C

Scottish Highers: ABBBB inc. two sciences

Irish Leaving Cert: Offers will be made on the basis of 5 or 6 Higher level subjects

International Bacc: 35 points with 16 in HL subjects.

IELTS: 6.0

Financial Support

Lancaster University's priority is to support every student to make the most of their life and education. In addition to government maintenance loans, grants and national scholarships, Lancaster University offers a range of financial support for full time UK Undergraduate students from lower-income backgrounds. Many students each year will be entitled to bursaries or scholarships to help them with the cost of fees and/or living expenses.

The Lancaster Scholarship package is designed to reward the hard work and natural ability of full-time UK students applying to study with us regardless of their household income. Students achieving A*, A, A in their A-level examinations (or equivalent academic qualifications) will receive a £1,000 per year Lancaster Scholarship during their undergraduate studies if they place us as their firm choice institution. Continuation of the Lancaster Scholarship is subject to satisfactory academic progression.

Our combined £5,000 bursary package will help students from England whose household incomes are less than £25,000 per year with fees and living costs.

Students from England eligible for our £5,000 bursary package will also be awarded a £3,000 Lancaster Scholarship if they achieve A*, A, A in their A-level examinations (or equivalent academic qualifications). This totals £8,000 of support for students during their studies.
