What will you study?

Our flexible Engineering programme brings to life technologies like renewable energy, mechatronics and microwave accelerator science, along with other emerging technologies like micro and nano electronics, new materials and advanced sensor technology.

At Lancaster you will experience a new interactive way of learning. Practical and experimental classes offer you hands-on experience to complement your course's theory modules while innovative design-build-test projects replace traditional lab sessions.

All our undergraduate degrees start with a common first year, regardless of which discipline you choose, and includes modules such as Strengths and Materials and Electrical and Electronics Fundamentals as well as Engineering Mathematics courses. At the end of your first year, you can choose to specialise in a particular field of Engineering and choose from second year modules including Engineering Analysis and Instrumentation and Control.

You will also decide whether to study overseas. If you take our Study Abroad variant, you'll spend the second year of your course studying at a partner university in North America or Australasia. This counts towards a full year of your academic study.

Undergraduates on our Bachelors programme complete their studies in three years, following courses appropriate to their selected discipline. If you continue on to Masters level, your fourth year modules may include Nuclear Engineering Systems and Advanced CAD/CAM.

Where could it take you?

Many of our graduates go on to work with the companies we have strong links with, often starting on salaries in excess of £26,000 per annum. Recent Engineering graduates have embarked upon careers as electronic, mechanical, applications, design and nuclear systems engineers.

As well as specific technical knowledge, your Engineering degree teaches you skills of logical analysis, communication, problem solving and project management. They are used by our graduates for work in design, project engineering and management, research, contracts, sales and marketing and data analysis. Our graduates also choose to continue their studies to MSc and PhD level.

Typical entry requirements

For courses starting in 2013:

A-level: AAA inc. Maths; to also include a Physical Science A-level, i.e. Phys, Chem, Design Tech, Electronics etc. We normally expect three A-levels.

General Studies: Accepted as one of the best 3 grades if 4 A-levels are presented

Key skills: Not included in offer

Scottish Highers: ABBBB. Advanced Higher in Maths is helpful.

International Bacc: 36 pts overall with 16 from best three HL courses, inc. Maths at higher level

IELTS: 6.0

BTEC: DDD including distinctions in Maths modules

Direct entry to second year: Appropriate qualifications include a good Higher National Diploma or Certificate in relevant subjects, or a Higher Diploma from polytechnics in Hong Kong and Singapore. Candidates with other qualifications of comparable standing should write to enquire.

Financial Support

Lancaster University's priority is to support every student to make the most of their life and education. In addition to government maintenance loans, grants and national scholarships, Lancaster University offers a range of financial support for full time UK Undergraduate students from lower-income backgrounds. Many students each year will be entitled to bursaries or scholarships to help them with the cost of fees and/or living expenses.

The Lancaster Scholarship package is designed to reward the hard work and natural ability of full-time UK students applying to study with us regardless of their household income. Students achieving A*, A, A in their A-level examinations (or equivalent academic qualifications) will receive a £1,000 per year Lancaster Scholarship during their undergraduate studies if they place us as their firm choice institution. Continuation of the Lancaster Scholarship is subject to satisfactory academic progression.

Our combined £5,000 bursary package will help students from England whose household incomes are less than £25,000 per year with fees and living costs.

Students from England eligible for our £5,000 bursary package will also be awarded a £3,000 Lancaster Scholarship if they achieve A*, A, A in their A-level examinations (or equivalent academic qualifications). This totals £8,000 of support for students during their studies.
