What will you study?

Sustainable Engineering is the process of using energy and resources at a rate that does not compromise the natural environment, or the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

Our three-year BEng course will give you a broad foundation in Engineering with a focus on sustainability issues. You will develop skills in making informed choices about material selection, designing products with due consideration to their lifecycle, analysing existing products and understanding their impact on the environment.

Your course begins with core Engineering and Engineering Mathematics subjects- such as Energy, Technology and Sustainability- and will develop your skills and knowledge over the length of the programme to be able to design and implement sustainable systems and technology in the material, manufacturing and energy sectors.

Our four-year MEng course includes modules such as Renewable Energy as well as intensive industrial placements where you will put your learning into practice, helping businesses to solve specific problems at the cutting-edge of technology.

Where could it take you?

Many of our graduates go on to work with the companies we have strong links with, often starting on salaries in excess of £26,000 per annum. Recent Engineering graduates have embarked upon careers as electronic, mechanical, applications, design and nuclear systems engineers.

As well as specific technical knowledge, your Engineering degree teaches you skills of logical analysis, communication, problem solving and project management. They are used by our graduates for work in design, project engineering and management, research, contracts, sales and marketing and data analysis. Our graduates also choose to continue their studies to MSc and PhD level.

Typical entry requirements

For courses starting in 2013:

A-level: AAAinc. Maths; to also include a Physical Science A-level, i.e. Phys, Chem, Design Tech, Electronics etc. We normally expect three A-levels.

General Studies: Accepted only as one of the best 3 grades if 4 A-levels presented

Preference: For a majority of units to be from A-levels

Key skills: Not included in offer.

Scottish Highers: AAABB (ADvanced Higher in Maths is helpful)

Irish Leaving Cert: Offers will be made on the basis of 5 or 6 Higher level subjects. Please contact the Undergraduate Admissions Office (01524 592028) for further information

International Bacc: 36 ptsoverall with 16 pts from best three HL courses, inc Maths at higher level

BTEC: DDD to include Maths at distinction

Direct entry to second year: Appropriate qualifications include a good Higher National Diploma or Certificate in relevant subjects, or a Higher Diploma from polytechnics in Hong Kong and Singapore. Candidates with other qualifications of comparable standing should write to enquire.

Financial Support

Lancaster University's priority is to support every student to make the most of their life and education. In addition to government maintenance loans, grants and national scholarships, Lancaster University offers a range of financial support for full time UK Undergraduate students from lower-income backgrounds. Many students each year will be entitled to bursaries or scholarships to help them with the cost of fees and/or living expenses.

The Lancaster Scholarship package is designed to reward the hard work and natural ability of full-time UK students applying to study with us regardless of their household income. Students achieving A*, A, A in their A-level examinations (or equivalent academic qualifications) will receive a £1,000 per year Lancaster Scholarship during their undergraduate studies if they place us as their firm choice institution. Continuation of the Lancaster Scholarship is subject to satisfactory academic progression.

Our combined £5,000 bursary package will help students from England whose household incomes are less than £25,000 per year with fees and living costs.

Students from England eligible for our £5,000 bursary package will also be awarded a £3,000 Lancaster Scholarship if they achieve A*, A, A in their A-level examinations (or equivalent academic qualifications). This totals £8,000 of support for students during their studies.
