Research Interests

I am involved in the development of therapies for the preservation and restoration of sight. I have long term collaboration in this area with Kyoto Prefectural Medical University I am currently involved in several projects, listed below.

  • The identification and characterisation of stem cells
  • Research into the causes of corneal dysfunction.
  • Corneal transplantation.
  • Development of an artificial cornea.
  • Development of corneal stem cell therapies.
  • Development of an in vitro model of the eye.

I am currently funded by the Royal Society, the BBSRC and the EPSRC. Research and graduate student positions are sometimes available in these research areas. I am also on the steering committee of the N8 Centre for Translational Regenerative Medicine which has recently received 2 million phase II funding.

Honours and Prizes

Award of 2004 Daiwa Adrian prize as part of a four person international team working on Corneal Diseases, presented at the Royal Society on 25th November 2004.
Fellow of the Royal Microscopy Society.
Visiting Scientist at Kyoto Prefectural University of Medicine, Japan
