Alyson is the principal investigator on 'Personality and the Student Experience', investigating associations between a personality style characterised by creativity and extroversion, mood, and academic achievement in a student population (for more information, see Personality and the Student Experience). She is also collaborating with Prof Steven Jones and Dr June Gruber (Yale University) on a study of experiences of inspiration and bipolar disorder.

The psychological processes underlying the development and maintenance of bipolar disorder and associated conditions, particularly cognitive style and behavioural coping strategies.

Psychosocial risk and resilience factors for developing mental health problems in high-risk students and children who have a parent with bipolar disorder.

How understanding these processes can inform a coherent model of bipolar disorder and effective psychosocial interventions, including web-based interventions.
