Career details

Amanda Bingley is a Research Fellow in the Division of Health Research. She joined the Institute for Health Research (now Division of Health Research) in September 2001.

Following a BSc (Hons) in Geography at Lancaster University (1996), her ESRC funded PhD in Cultural Geography at the University of Edinburgh (2002) explored the influence of gender identity and very early infant and childhood sensory experience on subsequent adult sensory perception of landscape.

Amanda is currently developing new research projects with a focus on health and well being in older people; and evaluating creative arts methodology. She is involved in the postgraduate teaching programme including the supervision of Masters and PGR students and convening e-learning modules in ethnography, narrative methods and public health.

From 2006-2008 she was a Research Fellow for the narrative theme in the Cancer Experiences Collaborative (CECo) and from 2004-2008 she worked with Professor David Clark in the International Observatory on End of Life Care (IOELC), on a number of different projects, including a team-based project funded by Macmillan Cancer Support into narratives written by professionals, patients and carers about the experiences of knowingly facing death. In 2005, with David Clark, she researched and wrote a series of reports, and in 2007 a book length review and comparative analysis, funded by the National Cancer Institute, US, on the development of palliative care services in the region represented by the Middle East Cancer Consortium as part of the global, ongoing IOELC country report project.

From 2001-2003 Amanda worked on the two-year collaborative Cultivating Health Project with the NHS, Age Concern, Carlisle and Carlisle City Council researching the comparative benefits of gardening versus social activities in older people in Carlisle; and in 2004 on a Forestry Commission study with Christine Milligan into the mental health and well-being of young adults: effects of childhood play
