My interests

I am a medical sociologistwith a background inthe Sociology of Scientific Knowledge. I have over the years researched mainly in medical and health related areas, and have published on topics such as drug licensing, AIDS, risk management and sickness absence. I have become increasingly interested in the ethical dimensions of research particularly the ethical issues relating to health research and have also published on this topic.

Research

Since 1999 my research has been on cancer in adolescence and young adulthood, it is funded by The George Easton Memorial Trust. The first phase was based on the narrative accounts of parents whose sons and daughters hadbeen diagnosed with cancer - the majority of them having died from the illness. The resulting book, based on the narrative material is called Cancer in Young Adults: Through Parents' Eyes it was published by Open University Press in 2002. The second phase of the study on the young adults themselves resulted in the book Young People living wiith Cancer: Implications for Policy and Practice,and was published by Open University Press in March 2007. The book is based on in-depth interviews with young adults being treated for or in recovery from cancer and seeks to understand the experience from their perspective so that medical care, services and support can be organised and delivered in an age appropriate way.Mythird book on long term survivorship is entitled Life after cancer in adolscence and young adulthood, and was published by Rotledge in 2009.
