Research Interests

I joined the Division of Health Research in 2010 as a Senior Research Associate working in the Centre for Health Equity Research and Knowledge Exchange (CHERKe). Before that I worked as an adviser in a policy evaluation team in NHS Health Scotland providing support to local NHS boards and the Scottish Government to plan, monitor and evaluate their health improvement strategies. My expertise includes designing and conducting evaluations of complex interventions, qualitative research methods and research evidence/synthesis.

In my current role with CHERKe, I am involved with a Department of Health funded project that is evaluating the impact of the New Deal for Communities programme (a 10 year regeneration initiative) on social and health inequalities in England. Related to this, I am also a co-investigator for a 2 year NIHR study that started in December 2011 and is evaluating the contribution of community engagement to the impact on health inequalities of the NDC regeneration programme. I recently completed a project for the WHO EURO Social Determinants of Health Review, focussing on the situation of Roma populations in the WHO Euro region.

I am also keen to purse new research opportunities that explore the relationship of mental health to health inequalities and the use of research to inform the design and implementation of policies and initiatives that enhance mental health and wellbeing. I am also interested in the potential for cross-disciplinary research to explore how how historical contexts enable or constrain engagement in local decisions and actions and the role of history in illuminating contemporary patterns of health and social inequalities in communities.
