Personal Introduction

Following completion of a geography degree in Durham University I trained as a nurse in London. I worked in radiotherapy and the care of older people before moving into research in both higher education and hospital trusts undertaking research and practice development in the areas of oncology and palliative care. My interests in the care of older people and palliative care have led me to undertake several projects concerned with care homes. I was awarded a 3 year research fellowship, funded by The Health Foundation, at the University of Sheffield. The focus of this work was to develop end of life care in care homes involving older people, their relatives and staff. I now work at the International Observatory on End of Life Care based in the Division of Health Research, Faculty of Health and Medicine, Lancaster University. For five years (2006-2011) I was actively involved in the Cancer Experiences Collaborative (www.ceco.org.uk) co-leading work around care provision for older adults.
