Dr Maggie Mort is Reader in the Sociology of Science, Technology & Medicine and holds a joint post in the Division of Medicine and Department of Sociology.
A former journalist she spent six years as a reporter, including a spell as health correspondent for an evening paper. She then took up a joint ESRC/SSRC studentship to undertake her PhD in the sociology of technology at Lancaster University (1995). Her first academic job was at the Nuffield Institute for Health, Leeds University on a series of postdoctoral posts in health policy and politics (1994-7). Returning to Lancaster she was Research Fellow in the Management School exploring the organisation of primary care, transferring to the then Institute for Health Research where she worked until 2008 as Lecturer and Senior Lecturer, teaching on its masters programmes, developing its doctoral supervision profile and leading a series of major externally funded research studies. These have tracked her multiple interests in clinical practice, patient safety, new health technologies, learning in practice, public involvement and community responses to disasters.
