Dr Paula Holland

Lecturer in Public Health

Current Teaching

I am module convenor for Public Health: Theory, Policy and Practice (DHR 520), a core module for the PhD in Public Health programme.

I am also Director of Studies for the PhD in Public Health, which commenced in June 2011. This doctoral programme provides opportunities for professionals working within the field of public health to gain a deeper and more critical insight into their practice, whether they are based in the UK or internationally, within healthcare settings, within local government, education, research or management. The programme offers a higher level of educational engagement with public health for professionals not wishing to undertake a traditional research doctorate. The format of the programme (part-time and distance e-learning) has been designed to meet the needs of public health professionals wishing to enhance their research skills, develop their understanding of policy and practice and make an original contribution to knowledge development within their field, whilst at the same time fulfilling their existing responsibilities in service delivery.

The taught component of the PhD in Public Health (years 1-2) includes modules in research design, quantitative and qualitative research methods, research ethics, organisational change and development, and the theory and practice of public health. The research component of the PhD (years 3-5) will be supervised by staff in the Division of Health Research at Lancaster University but undertaken in the student's workplace.
