Thu Jan 25 2002 - Using Linux for everyday email, web browsing and word processing
A demonstration of how easy it is to do regular day to day things using a free operating system. Several email clients and web browsers will be shown and you'll have a chance to try some of them out.

Thu Jan 31 2002 - An Introduction to PHP
A gentle introduction in using PHP to create dynamic webpages. No previous PHP knowledge is required. However, you will need to know some very basic HTML.

Come and play a game that doesn't require god-like ability on the keyboard.

Thu Feb 21 2002 - Typesetting with LaTeX
LaTeX is a typesetting program that is used by many people across the world to 'word process' documents. A gentle introduction in using LaTeX will be given. All you need is an open mind to word processing; don't expect it to be like using Word.

Thu Feb 28 2002 - Creating Images with POVRay
POVRay is a program that can create raytraced images from a set of primitives (cubes, spheres, etc).

Thu Mar 7 2002 - Electronics Project
Exact details of the project are to be finalised, but it is hoped that this will involve a little soldering to create a device that can be controlled through the serial port of a PC. There will be a cover-costs-only charge for components for this event and you will need to register two weeks in advance so that we can order and pay for the components. You will get to take away your creation.

For the final meeting of the term we toodle off to Laser Quest in Morecambe for a bit of real-life Quake.
Membership
Membership is open to anyone - students, staff and members of the public. You can join at Freshers' Fair, or at one of the society's regular meetings.
The membership fee for 2001/2002 is 3 UK pounds.

- Thu Oct 18 2001 - Installing and using Linux for beginners
This will focus on how to install the latest version of RedHat Linux on a PC, plus the basics of using its graphical interface to word process, etc.
- Thu Oct 25 2001 - How to install new hardware in Windows
This will include practical demonstrations of installation of a scanner, printer and other external hardware items under Windows.
- Thu Nov 01 2001 - Junk Swap
Bring along any bits of hardware and other computer related items you no longer want. It may be that you can barter them for something more useful to you.
- Thu Nov 08 2001 - C Programming Workshop, Part 1
The first in a two part introduction to C programming course. The course will focus on ANSI C, which will compile and run both in a UNIX and a Windows environment.
- Thu Nov 15 2001 - Overview of the university network
This talk presents a view of how the university network fits together. It may even give some insight to the recent problems the university network has been facing.
- Thu Nov 22 2001 - Securing your (Linux or Windows) computer on the residence network
An explanation of why you should be concerned about making your computer safe and secure on any network (including the residence network). The talk also goes on to give pointers on how you can make your machine more secure.
- Thu Nov 29 2001 - C Programming Workshop, Part 2

- Thu Dec 06 2001 - Indian cookery; how to make curry and patra
As a follow-up to the regular curry visits we make after compsoc meetings, this meeting will demonstrate the art of Indian cookery and will tell how Patra are made.
