The Club

Training

The club's training sessions are held twice a week:

  • Monday - 19.15-22.00
  • Friday - 19.00-21.00

Both sessions are held in the Minor Sports Hall within the Sports Centre on the Lancaster University Campus. See here for directions.

If you would like to join us, or just come & watch, please feel free to do so. Please note that at present the club is only operational during University Term Times.

For the academic year 2009-2010, term times are as follows:

  • Michaelmas term: 2 October 2009 - 11 December 2009
  • Lent term: 8 January 2010 - 20 March 2010
  • Summer term:16 April 2010 - 25 June 2010

Cost

Due to the structure within which the Fencing Club operates as a member of the Lancaster University Athletic Union, membership is currently a three-part process. This entails:

  1. Purple Card - £10. The Purple Card is an enhanced NUS Card with significant extra benefits, not least of which is the ability to join as many of the University Sports Clubs & Societies as you wish. This also provides you with insurance whilst participating in our activities.
  2. Sports Centre Membership - £26. To gain access to the Sports Centre for our training sessions, you will either have to pay per session, or we recommend investing in a Standard Student Membership. Those who use the Sports Centre on a more frequent basis may wish to consider a Premier Membership, further detail of your options are available from the Sports Centre Reception. (Charges may vary for non-students)
  3. Club Membership - £40. This is a one off payment that entitles you to use of all Club Equipment and coaching, both in group sessions and on a one-to-one basis.

Whilst the combined cost may initially seem expensive, please consider that unlike most Fencing Clubs we do not have session fees, which are generally at least £5 per session. Over the course of the membership period our charges represent great value for money.

Members who are not currently Lancaster University Students will require a non-student activities card in place of a Purple Card. This incurs the same charge as a Purple Card, further details are available here.

Coaching

The Club's coaching is primarily provided by professional fencing coach Mâitre D'Armes Mike Ray.

Non-students

The Club also welcomes Members who are not currently Lancaster University Students, be these members of staff, students from other institutions, or indeed the general public. Please see the membership details elsewhere on this site. Please note that as a University Sports Club, we are naturally obliged to give preference to current Lancaster Students, so we would ask that non-students wishing to join please contact us beforehand.
