'
In the penal colony' takes place in a penal colony, funnily enough. An Officer insists to a Young Explorer that the ways of
the old commander (who designed and built the machine) should be upheld with zeal, however he appears to be alone in this
belief. The main source of debate concerns a machine that is used for capital punishment, by way of carving a passage of
text into the victim's back which describes the nature of their crime.
'Judith: a parting from the body' is a witty and provocative re-telling of the tale of Judith and Holofernes. In the morning the
great General Holofernes will continue his conquest of Israel by sacking Jerusalem. Judith, a wealthy Hebrew widow, plans to
sneak into his camp, seduce him and bring his head back to her people. If she fails, her people will be slaughtered. But what
must she sacrifice in order to succeed? In one highly charged night the two engage in a private and deadly war over sex, power
and ultimately, love.

A Clockwork Orange is familiar to most people through Stanley Kubrick's infamous film
adaption. Burgess's adaption transforms the story into a mini-musical, with music and
songs adapted from Beethoven's work along with Burgess's own compositions.
Alex and his vicious teenage gang revel in horrific violence, mugging and gang rape.
Alex also revels in the music of Beethoven. The gang communicates in a language
which is as complicated as their actions. When a drug-fueled night of fun ends in
murder, Alex is finally busted and banged up. He is given a choice - be brainwashed
into good citizenship and set free, or face a lifetime inside.
