Roses 2024 – Bigforth Drive closure and Sports Centre parking restrictions – Friday 3 May to Sunday 5 May


Lancaster Sports Centre

Bigforth Drive (the main University drive) will be closed from 5pm on May 3 until 6pm on May 5 for Roses 2024. This closure will impact traffic and access to the main campus, the Sports Centre and bus services during this time.

Vehicle access

All road vehicles accessing campus during this period will be required to use the Alexandra Park entrance to both enter and exit campus. Cycle and pedestrian paths in the area will remain open and available for use.

Road users traveling to the north of the University on the A6 are advised to exit campus via the Alexandra Park exit and turn left onto Hazelrigg Lane, traveling past Forrest Hills, to ease traffic congestion during this busy period.

Roses 2024 support staff will be in place at the junction of Alexandra Park and the South East Perimeter Road to ease congestion, control pedestrian routes and improve traffic flow.

Bus and coach services

From 5pm on Friday 3 May until 8pm on Sunday 5 May all scheduled bus and coach services will enter and leave campus through the Alexandra Park entrance. There will be disruption to regular bus routes on campus during this time:

3 May to 5 May 2024 – 1/1A, 4/X4 & 100 Service - (Bigforth Drive Closure)

  • From 5pm Friday 3 May to 6pm Sunday 5 May, Bigforth Drive will be closed. The 1/1A, 4/X4 & 100 service will operate via Hazelrigg Lane, Southwest Campus, Underpass, Southwest Campus & Hazlerigg Lane.
  • The 41 & 42 service will operate via the A6 (in both directions) during the closure.

4 May 2024 – 1A, 4/X4 & 100 Service – (North Perimeter Road and Underpass Closure)

  • On Saturday 4th May, between 10am – 1.30pm, the North Perimeter Road and Underpass will be closed. The 1A, 4/4X & 100 service will operate via Hazelrigg Lane, Southwest Campus loop and Hazelrigg Lane.
  • The 41 & 42 service will operate via the A6 (in both directions) during the closure.

Sports Centre bus stops

  • Both bus stops outside the Sports Centre will be closed during the time that Bigforth Drive is closed (the bus stops on the A6 by the Bigforth Drive entrance should be used as the alternative bus stops).

Megabus and Flixbus

  • Coach services will continue to use the underpass as normal, except during the cycling event from 10am to 1.30pm on Saturday 4 May, in which case they will stop at the Cartmel South Bus Stop. These services will enter and depart the campus via the Alexandra Park entrance during the Bigforth Drive road closure.

All scheduled bus and coach services will enter and leave campus via Alexandra Park.

Sports Centre parking

Sports Centre parking facilities will be closed from 10pm on Wednesday 1 May, until 12pm Tuesday 7 May. The Bowling Green parking facilities will be closed from Friday 3 May and reopen on Monday 5 May.

An alternative parking facility for Sports Centre users is available in the Sports Field Car Park, which will be subject to the normal Sports Centre car park terms of two hours free parking. Automatic number plate recognition services will remain in operation on the Sports Field Car Park during this time. Parking facilities are also available at the the Health Innovation Campus Car Park, and in multiple car parks on South Drive, however use of these car parks is not free to Sports Centre users and may incur parking charges. Other road closures and parking restrictions

North Drive will be closed to all traffic from 10am to 1.30pm on Saturday 4 May for a Roses 2024 cycling event. The closure will be in place from the Bigforth Drive roundabout to the East Drive roundabout. Subsequently, Bowland Avenue, Rossendale Avenue, Lancaster Square Avenue, County Avenue, John Creed Avenue and Physics Avenue will also be closed during this time. Any vehicle parked in these areas will not be able to be moved while the event is underway.
