Research interests

My overall motivation is to develop a deeper understanding of environmental systems in order to define appropriate practices and strategies for the management of those systems. To achieve this I undertake basic and applied research in geospatial science, which focuses on the following three themes:

(1) Remote sensing of plant responses to environmental stress: Here the emphasis is on developing novel remote sensing techniques using ground-based, airborne and satellite systems for measuring the biochemical and biophysical responses of vegetation to factors such as water deficit, nutrient deficiency and pollution. This work is contributing towards the adoption of remote sensing in forestry, agriculture and environmental security.

(2) Modelling the relationships between spatial properties and ecosystem processes: This theme emphasises the importance of understanding ecological processes across multiple scales in order to determine the controls on biodiversity and other ecosystem services. This work uses novel combinations of remote sensing and field data for collecting ecologically meaningful information across multiple scales and spatial modelling for assimilating data and building predictive systems.

(3) Applying geospatial technologies across different environmental systems: Here the emphasis is on adapting the rapidly emerging capabilities in remote sensing, GIS and spatial modelling to provide new insights into the functioning of a range of different environmental systems. Throughout, the emphasis has been on exploiting the unique properties of remotely-sensed information (large area coverage, spatial continuity, repeat acquisition etc.) and the ability for multi-scale analysis and representation of processes, in order to investigate the environmental system from new perspectives.
