Research Interests

Gender and Education
An interest in gender cross-cuts all areas of my research. I have particular interests in single-sex and mixed-sex learning environments, fear in education, and the on-going ‘moral panic’ and debates regarding boys’ ‘underachievement’. Fairly recently I completed two projects funded by The Nuffield Foundation and the ESRC on 'laddishness' in secondary schools.  The ESRC project explored motives for 'laddishness' amongst girls ('ladettes') and boys - see http://www.lancs.ac.uk/fass/projects/laddishness/index.htm. A book from this project - 'Lads' and 'ladettes' in school: Gender and a fear of failure - was published by Open University Press in 2006 (see publications list below).

I recently ran an ESRC seminar series with Carrie Paechter and Emma Renold  - ‘Girls and Education 3-16, Continuing Concerns, New Agendas'.  See http://www.lancs.ac.uk/fass/events/girlsandeducation/.  An edited book from this series was published by Open University Press in January 2010. See: http://mcgraw-hill.co.uk/html/033523562X.html

I'm currently on the Executive Committee of the Gender and Education Association. See: http://www.genderandeducation.com.

Social Psychological Aspects of Teaching and Learning
My research is guided by an overarching interest in social psychological processes in schools, particularly the relationships between learner and gender identities, and self-worth protection.

The PhD Examination Process
I undertake research on the PhD examination process (with Dr Penny Tinkler, University of Manchester). Our work to date has focused upon policies, practices, perceptions and experiences pertaining to the PhD examination process in Britain. In 2004 we published a book on the PhD examination process (with Open University Press): The Doctoral Examination Process: A Handbook for Students, Examiners and Supervisors.  See http://www.mcgraw-hill.co.uk/html/0335213057.html
