Ecofeminism and Music ~ Or how the interest in ecofeminism got CONSOLIDATED! I got interested in ecofeminism, partly through music. In discussing the two it is important to operate a wider definition of the 'political', at the very least to include the personal sphere of human relations. This increases the forms of music that we then can consider political, beyond the obvious artists such as Ani Di Franco. Not surprisingly, the music that got me into ecofeminism WAS overtly political, that is to say, through the band called Consolidated who addressed issues such as masculinity, meat, patriarchy and environmental destruction, and incidentally were all male - this was back in the early 1990s. Bands
such as Consolidated and the now defunct
Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy manage/d
to articulate a political message whilst keeping their music original.
In terms of political overtness Consolidated went as far as taking the
title of an ecofeminist book "The Sexual Politics of Meat" by Carol
J Adams and turning it into a song. This includes samples of the author
reading brief extracts from her book, "Eating Meat acts as mirror and
representation of patriarchal values....." etc, etc. This track, in
particular, was my intro to ecofeminism. I then went and found the book |
