Overview

The 2005 ASAB summer meeting will be at Lancaster University (http://www.lancs.ac.uk/) on the doorstep of the glorious Lake District, UK.

The meeting is organized by Ken Wilson (ken.wilson@lancaster.ac.uk) and Ian Hartley (i.hartley@lancaster.ac.uk), and will take place between Tuesday 19th July and Thursday 21st July 2005, inclusive.

The theme of this summer’s meeting is Behavioural Interactions – Visions of the Future, and it will focus on behavioural interactions of various kinds, including those between the sexes, between predators and prey, and between parasites and their hosts (click here for further details).

Plenary speakers include:

Professor Rauno Alatalo - Evolution of female preferences and male ornamentation

Professor Innes Cuthill - The art of concealment: prey camouflage and predator vision

Professor Robin Dunbar - Understanding primate social evolution

Dr Rufus Johnstone - Family negotiation and conflict resolution

Dr Rebecca Kilner - The evolution of virulence in brood parasitic offspring

Professor Naomi Pierce - Evolutionary dynamics of interactions between lycaenid butterflies and ants

Professor Bill Rice - Coevolution between the sexes: sexual selection vs. sexual conflict

As well as these extended talks by the plenary speakers, there will also be shorter talks and posters by the ASAB membership.

On the social side, planned events include a “Lancashire” evening, where traditional Lancashire Hot Pot will be served, and, on the last night (Thursday), a barn dance in a beautiful converted farmhouse building, with ceilidh music by Striding Edge.

There will also be an opportunity to visit to the RSPB’s Leighton Moss Nature Reserve*, walk in beautiful Arnside, or explore the various attractions of Lancaster City Centre, including Lancaster Castle.
