Why Power line Communications?

    • No more wires, and being able to plug in and use
    • Sharing  Internet connection
    • Freedom of Moving your computers and appliances where you want
    • Easy to install and use
    • high transmission rate
    • Secure data-encryption
    • Utilizes existing power source for all your communications needs

    Transmission over Power lines

Single load phase response                     Single load Amplitude Response

Research work   co-sponsored by NOR. WEB DPL Ltd and the EPSRC

This project was in conjunction with NOR. WEB Communications the Public Telecommunications Operator (PTO) and NOR. WEB DPL Ltd, the Digital Power Line (DPL) marketing and Development Company.  Developed techniques for the transmission of data over power lines. Propagation measurements  carried out on closed, in-house, low voltage electricity distribution ring mains in order to define the characteristics of such networks and the spectrum which might be available for broadband communication purposes. Over relatively short distances, say up to 10m, frequencies as high as 150 MHz  can be considered.

I have investigated some of the theoretical limitations for data transmission and the practical effects of network attenuation, frequency response, propagation delay and noise, link power budgets and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) issues, which must be efficiently explored and considered when dealing with this hostile channel.

The project includes the measurement and simulation of the power line channel, and uses frequency hopping spread spectrum techniques coupled with Reed Solomon codes to produce an efficient operational system.
