Javad
attended Kaveh secondary school in
Kermanshah
for his school diploma. In 1978 he attended Eaton Bell
School for English Language in Norwich prior to higher
education studies for Marine Engineering with British
Petroleum (BP) at the South Shields and Glasgow Marine and
Technical Colleges. After a number of years sea-going
experience this enabled him to rise through ranks to Chief
Engineering Officer status. In 1985 he joined National
Nuclear Corporation (NNC) as a Mechanical/
Commissioning
Engineer at
Heysham II
Nuclear Power
Station. Javad joined Lancaster University in 1987 where he
was graduated with BEng and MEng Honours degrees in
Mechatronics Engineering. He joined Rolls Royce Nuclear
Engineering as a Mechanical/Electrical Engineer where he was
seconded to British Energy working at
Heysham I
and on the BNFL Thermal Oxide Reprocessing Plant (THORP)
Project and commissioning Magnox Encapsulation Plant (EP1)
and Filtration plants until 1995.
To further his academic studies he rejoined Lancaster
University. During this employment as a Teaching/Research
Fellow he was awarded an MSc in Digital Signal Processing
and its Applications and a PhD in Digital Communications
Systems researching in “High Frequency Digital Power Line
Transmission for Terrestrial and Marine Networks” in 1996
and 2002 respectively.
In September
2003 he joined the University Centre at Blackburn College
and as a Group Leader and Lecturer. He successfully
developed courses and led BEng Intensive Modular Delivery
and on Campus Programmes validated by Lancaster University
and
IET
accredited BEng (Ordinary and Honours) degrees within the
School of Science and Technology. Throughout these periods
Javad has been an active researcher and written and
published in the field of power line communications.
Javad
recently joined UCLAN where he is lecturing in Engineering,
project management and Digital Communications Systems. Javad
is developing
Masters by Research
and taught courses both in Sustainable Energy and Nuclear
Decommissioning related projects which will
provide excellent opportunities for the graduates. The aim
is to bridge the link between academia (UCLAN) and industry
in general but Nuclear in particular under the banner of
John Tyndall Institute for Nuclear Research
from UCLAN's state of the art campus at the
Westlakes
Science and Technology Park in Cumbria. Nuclear
Decommissioning presents some fascinating and significant
research challenges.
Javad is also leading the Engineering Education Scheme (EDT)
building a link with schools
to encourage and inform pupils at schools in and around
Lancashire and Cumbria area about career possibilities and
paths in engineering,
promoting
UCLAN's Science and Engineering programmes.

Thesis Abstract
High Frequency
Digital Power Line Transmission for Terrestrial and Marine
Networks
-
As digital communication expands, the demand for
available bandwidth is reaching saturation point; the
electricity distribution network (EDN), however,
presents itself as an ideal candidate for filling this
gap. During this research an initial feasibility study
investigated the potential utilization of Electricity
Distribution Networks (EDN). To realise these
three-port directional conditioning units for coupling
the network were developed. Interference criteria on
high frequency (HF) radio operated in close proximity to
in-house are studied to reuse the available spectrum.
Due to the absence of appropriate guidelines from the
standardisation agencies (ETSI, CENELEC and others)
coexistence with other primary users such as emergencies
and surveillance services of the HF bands. Further
areas investigated are the attenuation of the injected
signal, per Hz and per unit length, of the network, the
dispersion of broadband impulsive signals, multi-path
reflection, and cross talk.
To develop and implement successful communication over
the power line channel requires models of the transfer
characteristics of the mains network. This thesis offers
a modelling tool for obtaining nodal characteristics in
a networking scenario and a near real- time channel
simulator for capturing data. Modem design and
implementations that are resilient to channel impairment
is a challenging task. Aided with specially designed
modelling tools, an attempt has been made to assess the
suitability of an OFDM model using a COSSAP software
UNIX platform. The results suggest the possibility of a
highly cost-effective telecommunication solution for
high-speed data communication over power lines. However
to achieve such rates over noisy low voltage power
lines, smart sophisticated modem technology must be
designed. This research was complemented by a parallel
study of marine application for which the analysis of
the channel characteristics of the new environment is
presented. The study concluded with the design and build
of a marine application remote controllable multimedia
kit that offers a point-to-point duplex of audio, video,
text and messaging. The work was initially sponsored by
NORWEB and EPSRC and subsequently by the QINETIQ navy
project.
