Disability Policy

  1. The University acknowledges and supports the social model of disability in which disabled people are seen to be disadvantaged not by their impairment but by social barriers, including the design of the environment, methods of information provision, institutional practices and the attitudes of others in society. The University further recognises the right of disabled students, staff and visitors to hold alternative views about their impairment and to make a personal definition of their own situation.
  2. The University welcomes applications from disabled students, and seeks to increase substantially their representation within the student body. Decisions on admissions will be made primarily on academic grounds.
  3. The University will continue to seek to improve working conditions and the possibility of career progression for disabled staff.
  4. The University will seek to improve access on campus for all disabled users of University facilities.
  5. The University Equal Opportunities Committee will keep under constant and detailed review the practical arrangements for the admission and progress of disabled students; the recruitment and career progression of disabled staff; and access improvements for all disabled members of the University community and visitors.

Contextual note
The Disability Policy is one of a number of discrete policies on equalities issues which relate to broader University equal opportunities policies for staff and students. These are set out below.

Equal Opportunities in Employment

Lancaster University is committed to a comprehensive policy of equal opportunities for all members of the University community. The University aims to ensure that individuals are recruited, selected, assessed, promoted and treated fairly on the basis of their relevant merits and abilities. The University recognises that an effective equal opportunities policy contributes to its long term success and competitiveness and is committed to a programme of action to implement the policy. This policy aims to ensure that no job applicant, potential or existing student or member of staff, in any employment designation, receives less favourable treatment on the grounds of gender, marital status, family responsibilities, disability, cultural background, religious or political beliefs, nationality, ethnic or class origins, age, health, being lesbian, gay, bisexual or trans or on any other grounds not relevant to good employment and learning practice. This might include an offending background that does not create risk to children or vulnerable adults. This policy is consistent with the University's Charter and its Employment Policy.

Statement on Student Equal Opportunities

You should be treated on the basis of merit, capacity and potential and not be disadvantaged by gender, marital status, family responsibilities, disability, cultural background, religious or political beliefs, nationality, ethnic or class origins, age, health, being lesbian, gay, bisexual or trans or any other distinction irrelevant to academic study. This might include an offending background that does not create risk to children or vulnerable adults.
