Double Masters Degrees Programme in Collaboration with Ritsumeikan University, Japan

Ritsumeikan University (RU) is a large private university in Japan, which was established in 1922. It has grown to 30,000 students spread over three campuses, the largest being in Kyoto, in the Western part of Japan.

Lancaster University has enjoyed a long tradition of research with RU in Social Sciences. In recent years we have formed an academic partnership in order to deliver joint programmes to give Japanese students the opportunity of an international experience as part of their postgraduate studies.

Double Masters Degree Programme

Students spend the first six months at RU during the Spring Semester, then join the programme at Lancaster for a full year, returning to Ristumeikan in the Fall Semester to complete a further six months. The programme is a full two years and students will be required to write two dissertations, one in English and the other in Japanese. These two pieces of work will be distinct from one another, but can be on a related topic.

On successful completion of the Double Master’s Degree Programme, students are awarded one Master’s degree from RU and another from Lancaster University in the following subject areas:

Psychology:
From Ritsumeikan University an MA in Psychology is awarded and a Master’s in one of the following subjects is awarded by Lancaster University:
International Relations:
From Ristumeikan University an MA in International Relations is awarded and a Master’s in one of the following subjects is awarded by Lancaster University:
Economics:
From Ristumeikan University an MA Economic Development, Economic Theory and Policy, or Taxation and Public Finance is awarded and a Master’s in one of the following subjects is awarded by Lancaster University:
Sociology:
From Ristumeikan University an MA in Sociology is awarded and a Master’s in one of the following subjects is awarded by Lancaster University:

Admissions Criteria

All students wishing to enter these programmes should have a good first degree in a related field to their chosen postgraduate subject, with at least a cumulative GPA of 3.5 at Bachelor’s level. For progression to Lancaster, students must also have gained a GPA of 3.5 in their first semester at RU, with appropriate coverage of areas relevant to their proposed Master’s programme at Lancaster. In addition students must have an IELTS of 6.5 or TOEFL equivalent. Students will also be required to attend a pre-sessional Study Skills course in September prior to enrolment on the Lancaster Master’s course.
