English Language Requirements

Entry to Postgraduate Programmes

If your native language is not English, you will be required to demonstrate that your command of written and spoken English will be sufficient for undertaking postgraduate study or research at Lancaster.

The University accepts the following English language qualifications. The minimum entry levels are:

  • IELTS (International English Language Testing System): 6.5
  • TOEFL (Test Of English as a Foreign Language): 93 (IBT)
  • Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English: grade C
  • Pearson Test of English (PTE Academic): 62
  • GCSE English: grade C.

Please note that some of our academic departments/units require higher grades. You should refer to individual programme information for further details. If you do not meet the minimum English language entry requirement but will meet all other academic entry requirements for your postgraduate programme, please see below for details of pre-sessional English courses at Lancaster.

English Language Preparation

International applicants who have taken an approved English language test, but who do not meet the minimum entry requirement for their postgraduate degree, may be offered the option of taking an English language preparation course as an alternative to re-taking their test.

There are three pre-sessional courses provided at Lancaster:

Fees

  • 20-week course £5,760.00*
  • 10-week course £2,880.00*
  • 4-week course £1,200.00*

* Please be aware that a deposit of 10% is payable for the 20 week and 10 week courses, and a deposit of £150 is payable for the 4 week course.
