Course Overview

The course can be taken on a full-time or flexible part-time basis and consists of six taught modules plus a 15,000 word dissertation.

This programme enables you to gain the knowledge and analytical skills needed to enhance child welfare practice. Essential research training will allow you to make better use of agency data, undertake small scale agency based action research, and make informed use of national and international research for best practice.

Given the current emphasis within children's services on evidence based practice and robust analytic skills, the MRes is ideal for increasing employability. It is also an essential stepping stone for further research at doctoral level for those wanting to work in policy, research or teaching by opening doors to funded PhD places.

Compulsory Modules:

  • Advances in Child Protection
  • Social Pedagogy and Childcare
  • Solution Focused Approaches in Child Welfare
  • Quantitative Methods in Social Work Research
  • Qualitative Methods in Social Sciences

Optional Modules (select one):

  • Social Data Analysis
  • Analysing Text and Talk
