Course Overview

We are interested in proposals from students working in any of our departmental areas of strength. Your topic may be based entirely within one of the four languages (French, German, Hispanic, Catalan), or it may be comparative or transcultural in scope.

It is also possible to receive joint supervision by European Languages and Cultures and another department in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences.

Although our research spans the nineteenth century to the present day we have particular strengths in modern European Cultural Studies. Our themes embrace Modern Literary and Sociocultural Studies, focusing on individual authors and literatures of single national cultures, but with transnational implications.

Modern Literary and Sociocultural studies

French Studies: Nineteenth and twentieth century writers, notably Baudelaire, Rimbaud, Gide, Sartre, Vailland and the Canon; Francophone Africa and modernism/post modernism.

German Studies: Modern novel; women writers; Austrian culture.

Spanish and Catalan Studies: Twentieth century narrative and cultural history; Republican exile, Women's writing, Catalan politics and identity, and Latin American culture and society.
