Course Overview

Although there is a taught component to this course, it is designed for those who already have a clear idea of the field they would like to research and is assessed primarily by dissertation.

The course can be followed as a self-contained MA, but also forms an ideal '1 + 3' bridging approach to PhD study.

In your first term you will settle on a research topic and be assigned a supervisor with whom you will agree a detailed work plan for your dissertation. You will prepare for the dissertation by taking the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences Research Methodology courses and then choose course modules either from within the Department or from related departments.

These include:

  • The European Union: Are we all 'Europeans' now?
  • Writing in the Margins: Narrating Cross-cultural Experience
  • Living against Franco
