Course Overview

Your English Language in the Media degree enables you to enrich your understanding of both the contemporary mass media and the English Language by studying them alongside each other. You'll study the structure, history and uses of the English Language along with courses on a fascinating array of media topics such as Broadcast Talk and the Language of Advertising.

In your first year, you'll study our core English Language module alongside two other subjects, choosing from, for example, Linguistics; Sociolinguistics; Media, Film and Cultural Studies; Sociology; Marketing, or a European Language.

Core modules you'll follow in your second year include English Sounds and Structures; Understanding Media, and The Language of Advertising. Study Abroad students spend their second year abroad.

Second and third year options include Discourse Analysis; Stylistics; Corporate Communication; Language in the Workplace, or Language and Identities, and you will complete Corpus-based English Language Studies and the Dissertation module in your final year.

Career opportunities

An English Language degree is suitable for careers at all levels in education as well as language related fields such as publishing, the media and information technology. It is also valuable in fields where international communication is important, like science, trade and international relations.

Recent graduates have gone onto work or train as teachers, speech therapists, computer programmers and consultants, bankers, chartered accountants, personnel managers, journalists and social workers. Our English Language in the Media degree is an ideal preparation for a career in the media, while studying abroad is a great way to make your CV stand out. A size able proportion of our graduates take up employment overseas.
