Course Overview
Lancaster's four-year combined French Studies and History degree gives you the opportunity to learn in a department ranked in the UK top ten by the Complete University Guide 2011 and to follow our newly redesigned History degree, taught in the department's new state-of-the-art premises. You will also spend a year working or studying in a French-speaking country, immersing yourself in the culture and language.
Your French Studies programme focuses on developing your fluency combined with an in-depth study of France's historical, cultural, social and political background in a European and global context. Your History courses cover British, European and world history.
You'll begin your degree with courses including French Language (Intensive for Beginners or Advanced) and From the Medieval to the Modern ? History and Historians. In your second and final years, you'll be able to follow modules such as Shaping Contemporary France: Culture, Politics and the Legacy of History; Economic and Social Change in France, Germany and Spain since 1945; Men, Women and War: Twentieth-Century Experiences, and An Introduction to Islamic & Middle Eastern History.
In your third year you'll complete your Residence Abroad: Intercultural and Academic Reflection before finishing your degree back at Lancaster.

The language department is so friendly, the staff are really approachable and I have made some of my closest friends on my language courses.
Career opportunities
In a globalised world, foreign languages combined with a knowledge of international history and contemporary cultures are highly valued by employers. Popular career paths for our graduates include advertising, journalism, library work, computing and accountancy.
Languages are an excellent route into careers in the Diplomatic or Civil Service, the British Council and other international organisations and language and culture specialists often find work in Europe-based or international businesses. Many graduates also choose to teach, either in the UK or abroad.
A number of graduates prefer to continue their studies and find Lancaster has varied opportunities for postgraduate research.
Entry Requirements
A-level: AAB inc. French unless this is to be studied from beginners level, in which case we require evidence of language learning ability. We normally expect three A-levels.

Financial Support
Lancaster University's priority is to support every student to make the most of their life and education. In addition to government maintenance loans, grants and national scholarships, Lancaster University offers a range of financial support for full time UK Undergraduate students from lower-income backgrounds. Many students each year will be entitled to bursaries or scholarships to help them with the cost of fees and/or living expenses.
The Lancaster Scholarship package is designed to reward the hard work and natural ability of full-time UK students applying to study with us regardless of their household income. Students achieving A*, A, A in their A-level examinations (or equivalent academic qualifications) will receive a £1,000 per year Lancaster Scholarship during their undergraduate studies if they place us as their firm choice institution. Continuation of the Lancaster Scholarship is subject to satisfactory academic progression.
Our combined £5,000 bursary package will help students from England whose household incomes are less than £25,000 per year with fees and living costs.
Students from England eligible for our £5,000 bursary package will also be awarded a £3,000 Lancaster Scholarship if they achieve A*, A, A in their A-level examinations (or equivalent academic qualifications). This totals £8,000 of support for students during their studies.
