Course Overview

Lancaster's four-year combined French Studies and Spanish Studies degree is taught by our Department of European Languages and Cultures, ranked in the UK top ten by The Complete University Guide 2011.

The main aim is to develop your written and spoken fluency while gaining a thorough understanding of France and Spain's historical, cultural, social and political backgrounds in a European and global context. 

You'll begin your degree with courses including French Language (Intensive for Beginners or Advanced) and Spanish Language (Intensive or Advanced). You'll be introduced to language specific culture studies and move on to second-year modules such as Shaping Contemporary France: Culture, Politics and Power, and Resistance in Spain and Spanish America: From the Spanish Empire to the 21st Century.

You will spend your third year working or studying in a country where French is spoken before finishing your degree with final-year modules such as Francophone Voices: Literature and Film from Sub-Saharan Africa, the Caribbean and Canada; Social Movements and Committed Writing in Mexico since 1968, and Living Against Franco.
