Course Overview

Lancaster's four-year German Studies and Politics degree is taught jointly by our Department of European Languages and Cultures - ranked in the UK top ten by The Complete University Guide 2011 - and our Department of Politics, Philosophy and Religion - ranked first in the Northwest by The Guardian University Guide 2011. This degree includes a year studying or working in a German-speaking country.

Your German language studies are complemented by options exploring the country's history, politics society and culture. In Politics, you'll gain a sound understanding of the key concerns and concepts of Politics and International Relations.

You'll begin your degree with courses including German Language (Intensive for Beginners or Advanced) and Understanding Politics and Governance. In your second and final years, you'll be able to take modules such as Becoming German: Identity Formation in Modern German Society and Culture, and Literature and Fame in Contemporary Germany.  Your Politics courses include Modern Political Thought; Politics of Development, and Politics of the European Union.

In your third year, you'll complete your Residence Abroad: Intercultural and Academic Reflection before returning to Lancaster to finish your degree.

For a list of compulsory modules, please see the tab above.

This department has brought me wonderful opportunites, excellent tuition and chance to explore languages and cultures beyond the lecture theatres.

Career opportunities

Employers increasingly look for languages and combining German with Politics opens up many careers.  European politics, journalism and commentary are viable, as are management and Europe-oriented sales and marketing. With strong language skills, you could also consider the Civil Service, the Diplomatic Service, the British Council and various international agencies.

You might also consider continuing your studies to a higher level. Lancaster's postgraduate degrees open up opportunities in higher education and our professional qualifications are suitable for careers such as interpreting. Many of our graduates train to teach German or English as a foreign language, either in the UK or further afield.
