Course Overview

Lancaster's Law and Criminology degree is offered jointly by our School of Law and our Department of Applied Social Science, where you'll benefit from innovative teaching techniques, an outstanding reputation for research and some of the best class sizes in the country. Lancaster's Law degrees also offer professional exemptions if you aim to qualify as a solicitor or barrister in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Your degree will provide you with practical legal knowledge and give you an understanding of crime, criminology and criminal justice from theoretical, historical, cultural and social perspectives.

You'll begin your studies with modules including Crime and Social Life and English Legal Systems. You'll be able to tailor your programme to match your interests, with second-year subjects such as Criminological Thought and Public Law, before moving on to final year options including Introduction to Property Law and Land Law.

For a list of compulsory modules, please see the tab above.

The BA Criminology in itself is really good, the 2nd & 3rd year modules are very interesting and give you a choice into which part of criminology you would like to study further.

Career opportunities

Many of Lancaster's Law and Criminology graduates choose to continue their training in order to enter the legal profession, either as solicitors or to practise at the Bar.

Other alumni enter, or return to, employment in areas such as criminal investigations, offender management, youth justice, restorative justice and crime prevention.

Your degree also provides an excellent foundation for further academic study and a significant number of our graduates undertake postgraduate academic work at Lancaster and various institutions in the UK, as well as mainland Europe and the US.
