Course Overview

Lancaster's four-year Spanish Studies and History degree gives you the opportunity to study in one of the UK's top ten departments language - as ranked by the 2011 Complete University Guide - and a History Department with a 95% satisfaction rate in the latest National Student Survey. You will also spend a year working or studying in a Spanish-speaking country, immersing yourself in the culture and language.

As well as acquiring proficiency in Spanish, you'll study the country's history, art, culture and politics. You can explore Spain's history in a broader European context or specialise in particular areas of research and study.

You'll begin your degree with core courses including Spanish Studies (Intensive for Beginners or Advanced) and From the Medieval to the Modern: History and Historians.  In your second and final years, you'll be able to follow modules such as Power and Resistance in Spain and Spanish America: From the Spanish Empire to the 21st Century; Economic and Social Change in France, Germany and Spain since 1945, and From Mutiny to Bollywood: Cultures of Rule and Resistance in India, 1857-1954.

In your third year you'll complete your Residence Abroad: Intercultural and Academic Reflection before finishing your degree back at Lancaster.

The language department is so friendly, the staff are really approachable and I have made some of my closest friends on my language courses.

Career opportunities

A combined degree demonstrates to employers that you are flexible, independent and multi-skilled. You will leave Lancaster with a thorough understanding of a modern European language as well as its history, art and politics. This is a great foundation for a career in the Civil Service, the Diplomatic Service or various international agencies.

Former Spanish Studies and History graduates have found positions in education, journalism, library work, advertising, business and management. Others have progressed on to further academic study, undertaking postgraduate research at Lancaster and other UK institutions or abroad.
