Course Overview
Lancaster's combined four-year Spanish Studies and Theatre Studies degree is taught jointly in our Department of European Languages and Culture and the Lancaster Institute for the Contemporary Arts (LICA). This degree scheme includes a year spent in a Spanish-speaking country, giving you the opportunity to immerse yourself in the language and culture.
Your Spanish Studies courses will develop your proficiency in written and spoken Spanish while exploring the society, culture, history and politics of Spain. In Theatre Studies, you'll expand your understanding and creative abilities through a stimulating integration of theory and practice.
You'll begin your degree with core modules including Spanish Studies (Intensive for Beginners or Advanced) and Introduction to Theatre Studies. In your second year, you'll study subjects such as Spanish Language: Oral Skills; Modern European Playwriting, and Media and Performance.
In your third year you'll complete your Residence Abroad: Intercultural and Academic Reflection before finishing your degree with courses such as Post Modern Dance and Physical Theatre; Theatre Administration and Spanish Language: Written Skills.
For a list of compulsory modules, please see the tab above.
Lancaster University's an interesting place. It's a friendly and accepting environment, and I'm really enjoying it here.
Career opportunities
A combined degree is highly valued by employers looking for independent, forward-thinking and multi-skilled graduates and they particularly value the strong communications and interpersonal skills gained on a degree programme with a foreign language.
Theatre Studies at Lancaster ranks highly for its graduate prospects. Many of our graduates find jobs within theatre - as performers, directors, writers, technicians and administrators - as well as associated fields such as journalism, the media, publishing and advertising. Others choose to work in areas concerned with the social applications of theatre and drama, such as teaching, social work, community arts and drama and dance therapy.
A number of our alumni have gone on to postgraduate study at Lancaster and elsewhere, whilst others have used their skills in careers such as personnel and the Civil Service.
